Police Pay Award 2018/19 Announced - Police Friendly & Metfriendly

The Government has announced a 2% pay award for police officers in 2018/19, effective from 1 September 2018. Our useful guide offers clear information on how salaries are affected for officers at each rank and pay point.

This year’s pay increase will consist of:

• a 2% pay increase for all police officer ranks
• a 2% increase to the London weighting payment
• a 2% increase to the dog handlers’ allowance

As a result, pay scales have been amended across the board for police officers. Constables commencing service and appointed on or after 1 April 2013 will earn £20,370 in 2018/19, while Sergeants on the first level of pay will receive £40,488. Meanwhile, Inspectors at the first level of remuneration can expect to earn £50,160.

It’s important to note however, the Police Federation of England and Wales‘ request submitted for consideration back at the start of the year was for a 3% rise.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid announced this latest pay increase will mean average pay for a police Constable at the highest banding will now total more than £38,600 per year, with this figure rising further in London and the south.

How are police pay figures decided?

This year’s award was granted following recommendations by the Police Remuneration Review Body (PRRB) and the Senior Salaries Review Body (SSRB). 

The PRRB was founded in September 2014 to make recommendations to the Prime Minister and Home Secretary on police pay. The PRRB receive written submissions from interested parties that include the Police Federation, Superintendents’ Association, Chief Officers and PCCs. Pay scales are no longer negotiated and are now based on evidence from each interested party, such as the Police Federation, Superintendents’ Association, Chief Officers and PCCs.
